"True Murder podcast" Is that an ep of one of the ones I suggested, or something else? If you look, you can find many, MANY episodes of old radio shows - dragnet being one particular fave of the podcasting community (it's matter-of-fact and somewhat gritty - about 50 years before CSI). Just look that one up on itunes and you'll find a bunch of others like it - mostly they're called things like "radio relics". People who've dug up recordings of old radio plays (detective and sci-fi in particular) and MP3'd them. I had some friends over to watch "the day the earth stood still" on The Big TV last year (I found a really hi-def video conversion and it was gorgeous), and I was astounded to discover that I knew the damn story - I'd heard it on a ye-olde sci-fi radio podcast a couple of years before as a radio play. I also had the fortune(?) to listen to some old abbot and costello shows (not the comedians from parliament ... the other ones). Those guys were .... utter crap (I mean the other ones). Bum and boob jokes and "ooh-err", for the most part. I'm not sure what adolescent crowd they were aiming for (departing soldiers, I suspect), but I only listened to enough to gauge just how unrepresentative their one big memorable hit was ... and if my sample was reasonable, they were morons. At the other end of the scale, I've heard a recording of that famous orson welles radio play - the war of the worlds. It's actually good. I'm not sure what sort of twit would confuse it with reality, but it is actually very good. I've listened to a few True Murder podcasts now. Not sure if I listened to one you recommended Matt. One i listened to was a little hard to deal with. Author (and former model and actor) Victoria (R something) was on talking about her book where she interviewed 5 notorious killers. I applaud her efforts but she was quite painful to listen to. Dan Supanski (?) was the interviewer and I suppose he does the audio. Victoria alternated between screeching loudness and a whisper. I nearly crashed the car in fright when her voice came through my headphones at full decibel velocity! She seemed a bit too, much of an advocate and all 'me me me'. I checked Amazon for her books but her ratings weren't that great so no purchase from me Victoria! On the flip side, I listened to another True Murder (with Dan S ) talking to Fred Rosen about 'When the Devil wore a Cross'. A much better interview, and I went and purchased his book because of it. Fred has a broad New York accent and he had me laughing at his 'Jewish Boy from Brookyln' lines in regards to learning about Catholicism. He is on twitter too which is nice when you can interact with authors as well as read them. (like George Megalogenis, Greg Jericho, Jill Stark) Richard Fydler talking to George Megalogenis about his book Australian Moment was good too I've got some BBC history podcasts too. I want to get a USB drive full of stories for my mum who is going through chemotherapy at the moment. She cant get around much and I hope she would enjoy some podcasts.

I was looking up the geology of my area (for an assignment at TAFE) and came across this creationist geologist site. How odd. The FAQ was illuminating. biblicalgeology.net/The Hawkesbury Sandstone in the image would have been deposited toward the middle of Noah’s Flood as the waters were rising.

Odd thing? Bob Ellis.
Only two days after posting a comment about Tony Abbott "f****** young girls while dressed as a priest", this morning he posts a joke about Christopher Pearson who has just died.
It was a 'joke' about Pearson raping and murdering young boys, then storing them in his fridge.
It only stayed up for an hour or so, then he pulled it - presumably having second thoughts about pissing on a dead man not yet in his grave.

Norman Tebbit's comments on the gay marriage debate in the UK.
"Gay marriage could lead us to having a LESBIAN QUEEN!"

"this morning he posts a joke ..."
What a bozo.
Re lesbian queen - nothing really prevents that NOW.
Since you mentioned queen ... and odd things ...
Judging by the dodgy mobile phone videos on youtube (which they encourage, apparently), those guys are quite good fun in concert.

Bob Ellis is a dishonest dickhead.
He removed a 'joke' he posted yesterday morning about Pearson raping and murdering young boys, but not before a few people read it. Someone takes him to task, but he denies all knowledge of it.

Bob, you are a total disgrace. I read your vile piece of verse.
Truly, why?? Reply

What piece of verse? About Pearson? Where?
Please quote it."

Thanks MoC. I'll give Ellis a chance to respond (I've posted a comment on his site), but I'm sorely tempted to send it to you-know-who just to be a troublemaker. (Not really)

Well Ellis hasn't seen fit to post my comment (although he's allowed many others since I sent mine).
Should I send the screenshot to Crikey?

"Should I ..."
Why not? It's up to them if they want to do anything with it.

Maybe I should be pleased with myself. I've been blocked from posting comments on Bolt's blog and now Ellis' as well! Muh freedoms!

Bob Ellis shows all his tact and delicacy today -
"It is the kind of locker-room bullying style that, if it works, would also work, if I tried it on my new station, against the bride-deserting, pederast-befriending (Christopher Pearson was a pederast, I hear; what do you hear?), spoiled and wanking priest (Battlelines, p17) and moral weakling (he asked his mother to tell his bride it was off) Tony Abbott....Abbott, dressed as a priest and rooting parishioners will not affect the women’s vote, Van Onselen insists. Gee, that’s logical."

Apparently there really is no intelligence or education barrier to becoming a congressman. Republican congressman resurrects embarrassing episode from 2012 elections: 'The incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low'I'm confused, though ... why is he dropping idiocy like that when there isn't an election on? I assumed they had to save all that stuff for when it really mattered most. Just to put his comments into their full context ... because there will be people over at PJM et al who try to claim (after searching for anything else they can use and coming up short) that he's quoted out of context .... “Before, when my friends on the left side of the aisle here tried to make rape and incest the subject — because, you know, the incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low. But when you make that exception, there’s usually a requirement to report the rape within 48 hours. And in this case that’s impossible because this is in the sixth month of gestation. And that’s what completely negates and vitiates the purpose for such an amendment.” Nope. Doesn't make it any better. That's still ignorant stupidity. It really is astonishing that the US right is still trying to edge back that particular right, using any and all tactics it can find. They know how it ends if they fail, and they (should) know how it ends if they succeed. But they're doing it anyway. A comment today by Anne Summers (who bolt really truly hates, so she's probably right about most things) www.abc.net.au/unleashed/4748872.htmlI think she's right about the short memories.

Loving the Monster talk podcast!
And some nerds who do a podcast on HBOs Game of Thrones is hilarious. One of them has not read the books and the others are getting him to predict what happens, if you know the story you know this guy is going to be in for several shocks!

"Monster talk podcast!"
It is good, isn't it? :-)
If you like that, there's a chance you'll probably like "the skeptics' guide to the universe", "reasonable doubts" and the occasional "Point Of Inquiry" (dunno about that one - it was brilliant when DJ Grothe did it, then they had a few presenters replacing him and it was good, but it seems to be winding down now ... but there's a heck of a back-catalog to check out)
I'm just sticking some "99% invisible" on my pod to go do some ironing. Have a look at that - it's hard to categorise, but it's groovy and interesting. It's a small operation, and entirely funded by one of those "kickstarter" things - last year's drive collected $170k in donations in a couple of weeks. That's probably an indication.
Slightly similar to monster talk (in content and style, if not intent) is "cruel and unusual - a podcast on punishment". It does what it says on the box, and I can't imagine how he came up with the idea. It's broad-ranging - just about anything relating to crime and punishment, pretty much all interviews. Historical stuff, religion, policy, effectiveness, the law - there's an interesting 2-parter where he interviews a prisoner who was exonerated. The first part is about his case, time in prison and appeal, the second part is about his subsequent career in law (as a self-taught jailhouse lawyer he got a couple of cases to the supreme court - while still in prison - and stuck with it when he got out). I actually wish the episodes could be a bit longer, sometimes. It's not polemical and he's not apparently crusading for anything - it's just a guy who's interested in the topic.
