Hello? Is anybody out there? We're now 9 hours into the carbocalypse, the carbolocaust, carbogeddon, carborapture. How are people doing?
My lights still work, the heater's on. Clearly the internet is still functioning. I'm beginning to doubt.
Was I a fool to stock up on tuna tempters, st pellegrino and cab sav? Will I not need the ammo stacked in the laundry? Should I take down the fallout shelter I made out of a mattress and blankets? Can I leave it up anyhow? Please? Pretty please? I've got a torch and biscuits and everything in there.
Please, share your stories. Has anyone had to eat a family member? Is there rioting outside? Did you tape up all the doors and windows, and are you feeling woozy yet? Has anyone seen will smith, driving around in a mustang?
I'm scared to turn on the telly, in case the world HASN'T ended ...
(note: I don't actually have ammo stacked in the laundry)

Well there's been no traffic past the house, (I live on a lonely country road) oh wait, there's a car now...
I'm watching insiders actually. Something I never usually do, and I noticed there was an interview from Whyalla. They were so freaked out down there the turned their town into a warship. It pays to be prepared I spose.

Guess what tho. Just went for a Sunday walk along our quiet country highway and there was a dead cow, well a heifer. It had got out and apparently been hit by a car at 1 oclock last nite.
That was the first I heard of it tho. The cops had come and cut the ear tag off and as of yet haven't heard any more about it. There are 5 cattle farms here, this one and neighbours on every side, 3 of us have road frontage and one other has access via a side road, and although I recognised the calf a little, all farms have that same breed. So it was the end of the world for that poor critter and someone (tho who?) is gonna get into shit for it.
I blame Julia Gillard myself.

It's not like a cow is particularly fast-moving, or easy to miss.
Actually, to be fair, depending on where you are it can be a risk. My sister hit a cow many years ago. She was living in NT, somewhere near tennant creek. She was going 80 on an open road, not in any sort of hurry, it was dark brown, it was night, she just didn't see it.
Her car didn't go after that, though. She wasn't making no quick getaway.
I assume that the lack of responses suggests that humanity has been decimated, and you and I might be two of the few remaining unaffected people in the country.
I might put the housework aside and go for a drive - see if anything's on fire yet, maybe find out if there are roadblocks or checkpoints to control the violence - basically, are we talking "dawn of the dead" (the remake) or not? "There's a man, goin' 'round, takin' names ..."
I guess I could stock up in firearms, but I honestly haven't got the foggiest idea where I'd go in canberra to get them.

Personally, I'm about to finish of my last bit of mouldy black bread which I plan to wash down with my last few mouthfulls of Victory Gin. I'm also doing my best to keep out of view of the telescreen. The streets are littered with dead Proles, but of course the Ministry of Truth will be sure to keep that quiet. Now if you'll excuse me, there's been a very loud knock at the door... and there's a black van outside...

I think there should be some sort of law against MPs attempting to sing or dance. No Time Warp, no Skyhooks, and definitely no ABBA

We're screwed. My mum rang today to complain about the Carbon Tax. Apparently she may now have to pay 35 bucks to fly from melbourne to the Gold Coast to see her granddaughter.
35 dollars!!1!! We are so screwed.

I was going to make spaghetti bog tonight, but when I saw the price of mince has skyrocketted from $11.00 to $11.01 I decided upon a tin of Home Brand spaghetti in tomato sauce instead.

Has anyone heard any of our commercial AM radio stations interviewing anybody about today's (possible) Higgs announcement?
If so, did they manage to do it without trying to draw connections with climate scepticism?
Cory managed to link the FTL neutrinos with climate doubt (although I don't think he's followed it up since they found the timing problems), andrew bolt couldn't help but try to corral brian schmidt. Surely the wingnut collective can't let THIS one go without an attempt to claim it proves we can never be 100% sure ...
If all else fails they can just shout at them and accuse scientists of being government-funded stooges some more.

I really do wonder if Andrew actually believes his own arguments against same-sex marriage. It's so obvious that he's grasping at straws. 'Straights will be more promiscuous!', 'We'll end up with polygamy!' - does he really believe this? I can't help but think his opposition to SSM is merely a knee jerk reaction to what he sees as a progressive or 'leftist' cause. It's naked tribalism; 'the left' is for SSM and if it's legalised it will be a loss for conservatism in the culture wars.

There's no way to tell, I'm afraid. There have been times when bolta's beat the drum with arguments that nobody intelligent can possibly believe - that business with clive palmer being "verballed" for example.
I also tend to think that the (apparently, occasional) careful (and sometimes glaring) exclusion of dissenting information might be taken to suggest that perhaps a dispassionate, forthright examination of an argument is not foremost. See the danish gay marriage thread for one (arguable) example. I only add that this guy is a professional journalist, and I just can't believe that any journalist with his experience could so massively misread his own source material. But I could be wrong. There might be other explanations ... which I will conspicuously fail to discuss.

Now the carbon tax is costing us our chocolate! : Darrell Lea up for sale with 700 jobs at risk
The iconic confectionary retailer Darrell Lea has gone under after 85 years in business.
Up to 700 jobs at Darrell Lea’s franchises and company-owned stores, as well as its factory in Kogarah, NSW, are at risk.
The family-owned company, famous for its Rocklea Road and soft licorice creations, has appointed insolvency firm PPB Advisory as voluntary administrators.
But seriously, should we start taking bets on how soon Abbott will blame this on carbon pricing?
