We are all guilty of this. But righties seem to take delight in Gillard's 'hyperbowl'. But how do Aussies pronounce 'router', and why? I remember feeling guilty about making fun of someone who talked about Sigmund 'Froode'. Then we have many Americans who can't say 'nuclear' without it sounding like 'nulkear'. And derby should really be pronounced 'durby'. And 'mawl' should be 'mal'. And why is there a 'Surry Hills' in Sydney? And Louis Theroux remembers somewhat fondly the Australian journalist who insisted on calling him Mr. 'Therrux'. Language is a strange beast. My wife can't say 'z' - it comes out as 'j'. Which makes a visit to Taronga interesting. (I wanna see the Jew!) And then there's the 'v' and 'w'. "Would you like some Wegtables?" Truth is, we seem to be hard-wired with the pronunciation we learned as kids, and different languages don't all share the same sounds. Try pronouncing the common "Ng" found in many Asian languages. Then there's Xhosa.
